A framed cedar deck and a switchback stair that replaced a rotting platform off a brick foursquare.

The constraint

The brick rim would not take a conventional ledger, and the yard dropped four feet to the garage.

Outcome

The deck is independent of the brick, and the stair lands at the garage without a makeshift step.
